Resilience, Empower, Support and Opportunity for Underprivileged communities to Reduce Climate-Change Effects Project
NABOLOK has launched the Resilience, Empower, Support and Opportunity for Underprivileged communities to Reduce Climate-Change Effects (RESOURCE) project on January 01, 2016 as planned.
Nabolok has been implementing the above project in 37 villages under 4 unions namely Chandpai, Sonaitala, Mithakhali and Sundarban under Mongla Upazila of Bagerhat district. The direct target beneficiaries of the project are 2000 climate vulnerable people and indirect target beneficiaries are approximately 8,200 persons of the direct target beneficiary families. All the beneficiaries of the project are extreme poor with weak economical and social status and vulnerable livelihood. A total of 80 (64 Female +16 male) Village level Organizations have been formed comprising 2,000 direct target beneficiaries. Four (4) People’s Organizations (POs) have been formed comprising 80 (64 female+16 male) representatives (1 representative from each village level Organization). The project office is located at Mongla upazila sadar functioning from a rented building and there is 18 staff (14 male +4 female) all are from the previous VILLAGE project.
Alternative Livelihood options (ALO): Nabolok has been promoting several alternative livelihood option for climate vulnerable communities. Nabolok is providing different skill development, technology transfer training on livelihood and possible alternatives to overcome the problems. Trained group members will disseminate the learning’s to their respective groups. These group members also can share the learning’s with their family who are the indirect beneficiaries.
Mele Cultivation as ALO: During dry season majority of the agricultural land in Mongla remains fallow due high salinity and lack of water for irrigation. Mele cultivation provides an opportunity to smallholder farmers to utilze their fallow land. Although there is not much local demand for Mele, its leaf can be used for weaving mats, animal fodder and processed pickle. Nabolok has established 4 demonstration at 4 unions to promote mele cultivation as an ALO.
Nipa Palm cultivation: 2 demonstration farms have been established with the engagement of 2 groups leasing 2 lands (each land of 231-297 decimal) as ALO to encourage community people.
Integrated Farming: Nabolok also established Integrated farm is less saline prone area to bring back the community people towards the traditional cultivation
Awareness campaign through cultural shows: 1 Pot Song has been performed in the first six month to convey different messages to the community on climate change. Total 80 courtyard meeting have been conducted to raise awareness on CC impacts on livelihood and environment. This meeting will be conducted on quarterly basis. Indirect beneficiaries of the project will also be aware through this courtyard meeting.
Health Service through satellite clinic: Nabolok has established 2 satellite at the vulnerable unions have been established and will provide treatment till end. Department of Health & Family planning of GOB is involved. Primary treatments and counseling is being done with free medicine supply. From this health care service the beneficiaries will remain healthy which accelerate them to perform productive works.
Rain Water Harvesting System (RWHS): Total 60 Rain Water Harvesting System have been established in 4 unions. The site has been selected on priority basis where scarcity of safe drinking water is higher and women have to go a long way (3-5 km) for collecting water. 4 families (about 18 people) are getting service from per RWHS plant and capacity is 10000 liter. These 4 families will be responsible for any kind of maintenance. The women of those families will lessen their burden for carrying water from long distances and other community people can replicate this system. The beneficiaries are contributing 20% of total expenditure.
Initiatives against Gender based Violence: Nabolok has conducted numerous d training on gender awareness and reducing violence against women. Trained group members will disseminate the learning’s to their respective groups.
Formation of Self-help groups and People’s Organization: Nabolok has formed 80 self-help groups with climate vulnerable people and 4 People’s organizations. These group have their own savings and works as the social force to draw attention of government to ensure the rights of climate vulnerable people, to ensure the rights of GBV victims.
Coordination meeting with UDMC members of 4 unions on environment and climate change issues: 1 coordination meeting took place by UDMC members of 4 unions to share experience, working method and undertake development plan on climate change and environmental issues.
