Flood Oppressed Communities Uplift toward Sustainability (FOCUS) Project
Southwest coastal region is on the frontlines of climate change and one of the most disaster prone regions in the world. The “Flood Oppressed Communities Uplift toward Sustainability” (FOCUS) project activities, which was started from July 2016 and will phased out on March 2018, are implementing in two unions Jalalpur and Kheshra under Tala Upazila of Satkhira district. Based on decade long experience increasing assistance, of working with Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe, Germany in emergency humanitarian aid and rehabilitation work and successful completion of SCFRR and PFRC projects in Tala, NABOLOK intends further to assist flood affected people of Tala. Considering the number of households, affected people, damaged concentrations, damaged houses, sanitation and water crisis Jalalpur and Kheshra unions are selected as the target area of Tala Upazila, Satkhira district, Khulna by NABOLOK.
Flood Resilient House Construction for More Durable Flood Shelters
To safe-guard the beneficiaries’ from flood, fortified houses are provided to 42 families from comparatively low lying flood prone all wards of Kheshra and Jalalpur union. These families selection criteria was covering disadvantaged vulnerable, distress widows, disable and women headed families. These families are now felling safe and happy because in this rainy season they can stay at their house.
Installation of high raised environment friendly sanitary latrine for vulnerable households
During the flood, people especially women and children faces unwanted trouble as all the katcha latrines become wipe out and also mixed with flood water and spread unhygienic environment. Women have to wait until night for their natural call. By assessing these sufferings this project take initiatives and provide latrines to 42 families adjacent to the newly constructed house from comparatively low lying flood prone all wards of Jalalpur and Kheshra union. Each latrine set consists of four rings and one slab. The plinth of each latrine is raised above the flood water level to safe from flood water.
Installation of elevated Rain Water Harvesting System (RWHS)
To safe-guard the beneficiaries’ from various water borne diseases during and after flood rain water harvesting system were provided to 42 families adjacent to the newly constructed houses from comparatively low lying flood prone all wards of Jalalpur and kheshra union.
Training & Meetings
Training on Safe water, environment friendly sanitation and hygiene for WDMC: Six trainings were arranged with 162 WDMC members to spread knowledge about safe water, environment friendly sanitation, and hygiene.
Coordinator Meeting of UDMC and WDMC: Coordination Meeting of UDMC and WDMC Members were arranged in project area in this time span at Union Parishad Complex.
Preparation of community managed DRM plan at ward level: Total 18 community derived Disaster Risk Management plans for 18 wards of Jalalpur and Kheshra union were prepared by the community people through the disaster risk management sessions.
